As a team of academic researchers we constantly lament the lack of thoughtful discussion in politics and the mainstream media concerning social issues. The ability and opportunity for social science researchers and thinkers to be actively involved in public discussions tends to be scarce, and when it does happen we are often relegated to being offered the role as “devil’s advocate”. There is also a great deal of misinformation or misguided understandings in relation to sociological concepts and theories. We could mumble to ourselves, complain that nobody is doing anything about this and grow old like moss on a rock. However, we have decided this is not appropriate, particularly as we both teach and research in areas that seek to make a difference in the world. So, we have decided to actively become engaged through this blog and our website to discuss, debate and provide a forum for dialogue across a variety of topics related to “Health in Communities”. For us ‘health’ is not about curing illnesses, or rehabilitation of injuries or even telling people about risks of becoming sick and diseased. We are interested, and advocate for more discussion, in topics related to what builds ‘health’, what can support people to be healthy and how can we create environments, communities and societies that enable people access to a good quality of health. We will be using this blog to ‘translate’ various ideas and views that are embedded within academic knowledge, concepts and ideas surrounding the positive perspectives concerning health and wellbeing. We encourage feedback and discussion concerning the topics we will raise in this blog. Through these discussions we aim to facilitate the sharing and dissemination of academic knowledge to the media, policy makers, practitioners and the general public. If you want to know more about us as a research team, please feel free to check out our website.
We are also keen to work with others to further promote and ‘translate’ academic research. Just touch base with us via our Contact Us page. So……Welcome to our blog. We look forward to engaging with all and sundry across a vast range of topics in future blogs.
